The Church Newsletter for July 30, 2008

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK:

WELCOME NEW STAFF MEMBER

In our July Session Meeting your Church Session extended
a call to Marc Bell for the position of Christian Education
Director in our congregation. Marc has accepted this call
and began serving on Tuesday, July 29th and will be here
with his family for worship on Sunday, August 3, 2008.

Marc and his family currently live in Bremen, Kentucky and attended the Brier Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Marc’s wife is Kim and they have three children – Taylor (12), Carly (7) and Rupp (2). We look forward to his family moving to Bowling Green in the near future and being a part of our church staff.

Marc is a candidate for the ministry and is currently working on completing his education for ordination. He just recently attended a three week summer session at Bethel College and is currently completing his
undergraduate degree.

Marc will be working with our youth, administering our Christian Education Program and children’s ministry, directing our Parent’s Day Out Program and will serve as pulpit supply when I am absent.

Marc is an enthusiastic and passionate young man who will do a wonderful job. Marc’s family has many changes and adjustments required of them over the next few weeks. So I encourage you to pray for him and his family as they make this move.

SUNDAY WORSHIP
AUGUST 17TH, 2008 10:30 AM
At CAMP COURAGEOUS
SCOTTSVILLE, KENTUCKY

Awesome plans are being made for our worship at Camp Courageous.
Our Missions, Outreach and Public Relations Ministry has connected us with this wonderful outreach ministry. Several of our youth and adults have already volunteered at this camp for children with special needs.

On the morning of August 17th we will join the staff at Camp Courageous and have our morning worship service. Following our worship service we will have a potluck meal and then every family will be given the opportunity to tour the facility and see the wonderful ministry this site offers.

So make plans to be a part of this special outreach mission and worship event. As usual the church will furnish the meat, drinks, and bread. Your family is asked to furnish vegetables, salads, and desserts.

SPOTLIGHT ON JOANN HALL
Joann Hall is a big-city girl, a musician and a published writer. She played violin in the
Detroit junior orchestra and was also a pianist, but she gave up the instruments to use only her strong alto voice, with a show on Detroit radio. On coming to Bowling Green, Joann sang at the Manhattan Towers, a night club which booked the likes of Billie Vaughn and Vaughn Monroe’s orchestra. She also sang with Doc Livingston, whose son Tim now plays guitar for us.

Joann gave up the late night singing to raise her son but still sang on local radio, sponsored by Warren Electric. The hymn “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” was her most requested song, here as well as in Detroit. She would still be singing but developed vocal cord nodules in the 1960s. Surgery was not recommended and she was told to rest her voice. Although she tried some vocal exercise with a therapist, her voice did not come back.

This did not even slow her down. Since she was already working at the radio station, she began to help the staff to catch up with copywriting and eventually became a full-time copywriter, then worked her way up to program director, interviewing, etc, for 23 years.

Then as now, Joann was a striking beauty who was often compared to Kim Novak. TV jobs were available to her, but she was more interested in publishing and writing and chose a job with a national magazine, Back Home in Kentucky. She became editor and business manager during her 14 years there. After this, she was still not done. She then went to work at Western in their public and library services.

During all these careers, Joann was active in the American Business Women’s Association and was elected president as well as Woman of the Year in 1967. She and a group of her colleagues, called the Kentucky Colonels, traveled to Las Vegas for the installation and awards. As a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Joann was captain of the Kentucky Cardinals Drill Team, a group she took to Louisville to perform.

We would say Joann was a great success, but when her warm and vibrant mother fell ill with cancer, her suffering taught Joann what she calls a bitter lesson. Joann had felt very close to God but could not understand why her mother had to suffer so. After a few years, Joann returned to her roots and faith and believes that her bitter lesson was well-learned.

Of course, during all these careers, Joann did church work and became much more active in volunteering after retiring. She watches out mostly for the elderly ladies who depend on her for shopping and driving. It does sound like she has done enough.
